Embers

Embers

I almost fell over myself when I saw this opportunity, outside of a specialist set-up in a studio this kind of image is very rare. Normally smoke photos are taken indoors, in a dark room and the smoke is lit with a flash or bright light. However, here the smoke is outdoors and coming from a smouldering log after a fire at Rietvlei.

It works in the picture because all the grass and land behind was blackened and in shade while the bright morning sun illuminated the roiling plumes of smoke. You can read more about how I took this photo in the case studies section of my book: Rietvlei - the photographer's guide.
